The Shambles | York Shopping Streets

The Shambles York at Christmas
The Shambles is probably the most well known street in York. The street was once known to be a row of butchers shops complete with slaughter houses. The meat was hung up outside of these shops on display for purchase. Some of the original hooks are still visible. The name Shambles is thought to originate from the anglo saxon word "Shammel" which meant shelves.
I shot this image during Christmas time a as its a has lovely Charles Dickens style theme to it.
